At the D’Mark Guitars factory just outside São Paulo, Brazil, making basses is a family affair. Marcos Pereira, along with his two sons and wife, handcraft world-class basses using exquisite indigenous Brazilian hardwoods paired with time-tested materials that impress even the most discerning professionals.

What started as a guitar repair hobby in 1998 has grown into a seasoned business that produces works of art, bringing joy to players worldwide and providing pride and security for the Pereira family. The patriarch, Marcos, explains:

“A hobby, a garage at home, a passion for music and a great desire to work... That's what I had in 1998, when my first luthier workshop was founded. I started by repairing and adjusting instruments, gaining experience and the opportunity to provide services on instruments from renowned multinational brands. 

In the city of airplanes, São José dos Campos, most teenagers study something related to industry. I chose electronics at SENAI (1994) while gaining experience with professional audio.

Playing the bass guitar was one of my childhood pastimes. I learned it at church and, at the age of 25, I was already playing professionally. That's where my love for the art of music came from.

My repair work became known in the region for the quality it offered and the list of services grew. Given the requests from musicians, I saw the need to seek more knowledge and began manufacturing my own guitars. In a short time, I was already receiving demands from different states in Brazil.

On one occasion, a client felt he should challenge me and said, “If you build guitars and repair instruments so well, I believe you can build bass guitars too!” “

It is the mission of the Pereira family to deliver the highest quality instrument with a guarantee of exemplary customer service, all at a very fair price.

  • A: I was inspired by his passion for music and his dream of crafting exceptional instruments. In 1998, I founded a small luthier workshop in São José dos Campos, naming it D’Mark, meaning “Design by Marcos.” From the start, I envisioned that I would one day create my own line of instruments.

    I began by offering high-quality repairs and adjustments, quickly gaining the trust of musicians in the region. As this reputation grew, I decided to expand my knowledge and dedicate my efforts to learning instrument construction, guided by João Galdino, who taught me the art of viola-making.

    A client named Samuel Trone challenged me: “If you create guitars and repair instruments with such quality, I believe you could make a bass as well!” I accepted the challenge and, after months of hard work, introduced D’Mark’s first bass, the Omega. The instrument was an immediate success among professional musicians, marking the beginning of a new era of custom basses at D’Mark. ‎
